The 2022 Commonwealth Games Aquatic Campus challenges the generic approach to the mega-event typology. Such event are often designed for a linear commercial purpose, with minimal concern for the aftermath of the games architecturally, socially and economically. Through reverse engineering design intent, the aquatic centre is integrated into a program of social value from its invention. A juxtaposition of nature, social value and public equity. The typology will allow for unpredictability of future circumstances, it sees the aquatic centre integrated as a performance, not an event, thereby approaching the project as an experience.
The Aquatic Campus is strategically located at the intersection between existing stadiums and neighbours a new velodrome, becoming a soft transitional space. The condition of the context restricts the idea of asserting a singular architectural identity, therefore the proposal yields to the existing conditions and emphasizes on designing place for community with fixed and flexible programmes.
