GREEN LOOP

Green Loop

Reimagining the City core as a social and public park.

The Green Loop imagines the city’s inner ring road as a continuous social and public park. The inner ring road is currently used as a network to connect incoming traffic in and out of the city centre. Cars, buses and pedestrians use the inner ring collectively, however, the vehicular usage far exceeds the people and it unfortunately is a contributor to carbon dioxide/greenhouse gas emissions. The loop is developed as a car free zone where vehicular access is limited to deliveries and public transport (electric bus fleet), thus enabling the street to be prioritised for pedestrians and cyclists. Users of the Green Loop can indulge in various activities such as sports, playgrounds, yoga, lounging, food and drink, agriculture, exhibitions + more.

The aim of the project is to reduce carbon emissions transmitted by vehicles and buses through investing in social spaces open to all through parks and activities as part of Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone project. With growing climate concern, the loop encourages people to utilise alternative transport methods for those travelling in and out of the city centre. The loop will act as an ‘air conditioner’ to counter emissions from traffic and buildings — with planting and greenery introducing a sustainable and eco-environment.
